Your first session is focused on understanding what brings you in and determining whether Limestone Clinic is the right fit for your needs.
Your therapist will ask about your current concerns, relevant history, goals for therapy, and any previous treatment experiences. Together, you’ll clarify what you’re hoping will change and discuss possible approaches.
This session is collaborative. You are welcome to ask questions about the therapy process, structure, or your therapist’s approach.
By the end of the appointment, you should have a clearer sense of next steps, recommended session frequency, and whether you’d like to move forward.
Most first appointments are 50 minutes in length and take place either in-person at our Kingston clinic or virtually for clients located anywhere in Ontario.

A strong therapeutic relationship is one of the most important factors in successful therapy.
If you do not feel a connection with your therapist, we encourage you to say so. Sometimes a brief conversation can clarify expectations or adjust the approach. In other cases, it may make sense to "try on" another clinician to see if that would make for a better "fit."
Our goal is not just to “keep” clients — it’s to ensure you are working with someone who feels like the right fit. That's how therapy works best. Otherwise, what's the point?
No referral is required. You can book directly, and our Client Care Team and Therapy Matchmakers w(https://limestone.janeapp.com/#/discipline/29/treatment/854)ill support you through the process.
No. A formal diagnosis is not required to begin psychotherapy.(https://www.limestone.clinic/what-is-psychotherapy) Many clients start therapy based on symptoms, concerns, or life challenges without undergoing formal assessment.
Most clients begin therapy with weekly sessions, especially at the start. Weekly appointments help build momentum, establish trust, and create meaningful progress.
However, therapy frequency depends on your goals, the complexity of what you’re working through, how long the problem has been there, and your availability. Some clients attend sessions less frequently once things stabilize. Others choose short-term focused work, single-session Walk-In appointments for a specific issue, or intensive formats when appropriate.
Your therapist will recommend a starting frequency and adjust over time based on your progress and needs.
There is no one-size-fits-all timeline for therapy.(https://www.limestone.clinic/what-is-psychotherapy)
Some clients attend therapy for 6–8 focused sessions to address a specific issue. Others engage in longer-term work over several months or more when working through substantial trauma, relationship patterns, or longstanding concerns.
The length of therapy depends on your goals, the complexity of what you’re addressing, and how deeply you want to work. At your first appointment, your therapist will discuss your goals and help provide guidance on what a realistic timeline might look like.
Walk-In appointments (https://www.limestone.clinic/walk-in-psychotherapy-counselling-kingston)are single-session psychotherapy visits designed for focused, present-moment concerns. They are available online and in person at our Kingston, Ontario location.
Single-Session appointments are ideal for more discrete, specific situations such as navigating a recent breakup, processing a first panic attack, making a difficult decision, or getting structured guidance around a current stressor.
Walk-Ins work best for contained, current issues rather than long-standing patterns that require structured ongoing therapy (for example, chronic depression, longstanding trauma, or multi-year relational patterns).
These sessions are solution-focused and goal-oriented. Availability varies based on clinician schedules and is not guaranteed each week. Walk-in sessions are available in-person, online, and over the phone.
Current openings can be viewed on our Walk-In Availability web page.(https://www.limestone.clinic/walk-ins-available-now)
Our clinic specializes in structured outpatient adult psychotherapy.
Some of our therapists may be fully booked at the time that prospective clients inquire about therapy services, and wait-lists may not always be possible or advisable. Additionally, we may not be the best fit for individuals requiring crisis stabilization, intensive inpatient programming, specialized forensic services, or highly specialized personality disorder treatment models. When appropriate, we are happy to recommend alternative services.
